Layla

I don’t know what I expected for my first time, but I can honestly say: none of that.

Not the ice cream dripped in my belly button.

Not the brain-melting orgasm.

Not the tickly rasp of Roman’s stubble against the inside of my thighs.

And definitely not the business phone call right after, his eyes raking over me then away in clear dismissal.

Hey, screw you, buddy. So that meant nothing to Roman? Fine. Then he means nothing to me. I’m not about to break my own heart over a man who answers his freaking phone in bed.

Or in van. On cot? Whatever.

Doesn’t matter. I’m done with him. I’ll take my epic orgasm and I’ll be on my merry way, thank you very much.

Even now, marching through the trees, I’m still super sensitive between my legs. Slick and swollen. I bite the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to think of something—anything—other than Roman’s hard, heavy body pressing down against mine.

He seemed so into it. Did I do something wrong?

No.

I focus on the smell of green plants and moist soil. The distant trickle of a stream. I go to a lot of beauty spots for Lickety Split, but I have to say the forest is my favorite. It’s urgent. Constantly rustling with life. The crack of twigs; the beat of wings. And the leaves overhead dapple the sunlight.

As I walk, my angry breaths come deeper. Slower. My strides shorten and my heartbeat calms.

Seriously. Did I do something wrong? I sniff hard, swiping my nose on the back of my hand.

“Layla.”

His voice makes me jump. What, is the man a puma? How did he follow me without making any sound? And why did he bother, when he’s clearly so busy?

“What do you want?” I hate that my voice sounds so small. I don’t turn around—I won’t let him see my damp eyes. He doesn’t need to know that I got the wrong idea. That I thought this thing between us was something more.

It’s not like I invite just anyone into Charlie. It’s not like I’ve done any of this before—ever.

“You. I want you.” He says it quietly, but my heart slams against my ribcage.

“I thought you had to work?”

“I don’t. Not anymore.”

My toes scrunch against my flip flops as he comes up behind me. His heat washes over my back, his scent wrapping around me like a hug as his chest nudges my shoulder blades.

Roman sighs like the weight of the world is on his shoulders.

“I’m going to be apologizing to you a lot, aren’t I?”

My jaw clenches. I hate that. Saying it like it’s my fault.

“Try not being a jerk,” I snap, but his palms come down on my shoulders. He rubs the stiff muscles, kneading me the way I did for him. This morning in the springs—it feels like a century ago.

“You’re right. I only meant that I’m… out of practice. But be patient with me, Layla. I never intend to hurt you.”

His fingers are gentle but firm, digging into the knots on my back.
